About
VIQ/AIQ was inspired, in part, by Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Gardner was the first to recognize visual intelligence as a distinct and special intelligence and to elevate its importance in relation to more commonly understood forms of intelligence.
We routinely evaluate what we read and hear but most of us do not apply the same thoughtful daily attention to what we see. In this increasingly visual age, however, dominated by photographic images, our ability to think intelligently is now more dependent on our ability to look intelligently than ever before.
This site merges essential lessons in fine art and design, aesthetic philosophy, vision science, and media studies to create a fresh approach to looking more skillfully at images of all kinds. There is no better source of imagery from which to develop visual skill than fine art. If one is able to access and understand the complex elements of visual narrative used by artists, one can understand any form of visual messaging regardless of its source or purpose.
The question and answer format is used to inspire thoughtful reflection and guide viewing. You will, of course, develop and refine your own answers to these and similar questions over time.
All images in VIQ/AIQ are used in accordance with Fair Use practices, and are intended for educational purposes only.
